With the numerous number of skincare products we have in the market, it is usually difficult to choose the right combination. Nevertheless, creating a skincare routine can be absolute fun. Identifying the type of skin you have is very necessary in making sure that the skincare routine is effective. When you are able to tell the type of skin you have, putting together a personal ‘arsenal’ of cleansers, toners, moisturizers, exfoliants and masks will be very easy, and within a few months, your skin will reward you for the efforts and steps you have taken to give it a glow.
Steps to take in setting up a basic skincare routine include;

1. Removing makeup before going to bed
Makeup wipes or removers are easy and convenient in removing makeup. All you need to do is use a soaked pad to wipe off the makeup until it is gone.
Sometimes, eye and kit makeup are usually harder to remove. So it is best to use special makeup remover meant for those parts.

2. Cleanse your face twice a day
This should be done once in the morning before you put on makeup and once at night before you go to bed. Use warm water instead of hot water as warm water will remove the dirt on the face, but hot water will leave the skin dry.
Apply cleansers and massages it onto your skin in upwards, circular motions. Then remove completely by using a sponge of splashing warm water. Dab your face dry with a clean towel afterwards.

3. Yes, you need to apply a toner too
Pump a little toner unto a cotton pad and apply on your skin while avoiding the eye area. Allow the toner to dry on your skin, do nor t rinse it off.
For those with dry or sensitive skin, find a toner that is alcohol-free and use.

4. Moisturize your skin
After applying toner to your face, the next thing to do is moisturize the face. Apply the moisturizer the same way as the toner. You can alternatively apply it to your clean palms and gently pat it in.
If you have dark eyes or are bothered about wrinkles around your eyes, you can use a separate cream for eyes. Carefully apply the cream around your eye with your finger.

5. Exfoliate your face once or twice a week
This should be done only once or twice in a week or else you may cause damage to your skin. Rub the face gently during exfoliation as vigorous rubbing or scrubbing can be harmful.
For those that have active acne breakouts or hyperpigmentation, you should avoid exfoliating as it could worsen your condition.

6. Make use of sunscreen daily
Exposing your skin to the sun daily can cause premature ageing, hyperpigmentation and other problems, so it is necessary to wear sunscreen before leaving the house. The sunscreen should be SPF 30 or higher and should be applied fifteen minutes before leaving the house.
Sunscreen should be applied as the last step of your routine after you have put on moisturizer but before you have put on any makeup.
