We always get questions every time we write about Natural Hair. We have received several private messages from those who are thinking about going natural or who want to do the big chop (cutting off all of their chemically straightened hair). We say, go for it! It’s a great way to familiarize yourself with your roots…literally, the roots of your hair and the amazing texture that it sprouts. But it’s easy to get discouraged from taking that leap when the natural hair community has such a strong fixation with long natural hair.
We have highlighted some styles you can rock depending on how low your hair is.

Just get a low cut and wear your hair ultra-short. This is a brave move but it can look absolutely stunning! You can even give it an attitude with a side part.

Accessorize with metal headbands and chains or just rubber Alice band for that calculated look.

Use a head wrap to add a lil somethin’ to your little curls. Sometimes, less is more

Go Bantu!!! Consider going to a professional stylist to get it done if you want to make sure that each knot is even. As you can see, this isn’t just a way to get a great twist out overnight; it’s a fun, edgy look that looks great when you wear it out, too!

Rock some flat twists on one side or both sides of your head and leave the rest of your hair loose or coiled.

Do you have very short natural hair? How do you like to style you hair? Are you thinking about going natural or getting the big chop? Tell us in the comments!

We cant wait to hear from you.

Hair loss affects a large population of men and women all over the world. With the amount of importance our society places on our appearance (hair is a big part!), it is not surprising that billions of dollars are spent on hair loss treatments each year worldwide. Some treatment can help regrow some hairs with continued and diligent application of the treatment whilst some treatment solutions can help slow down or mask hair loss.

To find the best solution for you, you must first determine the cause of your hair loss. Hair loss caused by medical conditions can be reversed once the medical condition is treated. Hair loss brought on by stress tends to be temporary as well, and can be treated with the removal of the stress factor. Hair loss brought on by high tension to the hair, can be addressed once such styles that apply tension to the hair is avoided. However, the most common type of hair loss is Androgenetic Alopecia or male pattern baldness, which is hereditary. And because it is genetic, there is no avoiding it.

Androgenetic Alopecia occurs in men and women whose hair follicles are sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. Over time, DHT-sensitive hair (usually found on the top and front of the head) becomes weaker, finer, and eventually stops growing. Those who experience advanced hair loss however, typically have healthy hair follicles around the sides of the head. These healthy hairs are resistant to this hormone and survive for a lifetime

National Hair Loss Awareness Month does not mean that people are not affected by hair loss every day. Whatever your hair loss type and stage is, Natures Gentle Touch has the solution for you. Traction alopecia is a type of hair loss caused by a constant pulling of the hair. It is most commonly seen in women who wear weaves, tight braids and hair extensions, tight scarfs (Turban) but also occurs in those who consistently wear their hair pulled back tightly from their scalp. Traction alopecia can also be the result of excessive or harsh brushing and/or backcombing.

Traction alopecia is usually initially seen on the front hairline and also on the perimeters i.e edges, where most tension is exerted. However, over time the recession can move further as new hairs are put under strain. This can cause significant loss of hair around the hairline. Traction from tight hairstyles can also result in breakage along the temples which makes the management of hair much more difficult. If you tie your hair up with tight rubber bands, the bands may exert more tension on the hair and create cracks along the cuticle, eventually resulting to hair breakage.

At first, traction alopecia from hair extensions, braids, weaves and tight hairstyles is reversible; you can stop wearing hairstyles that exert tension on the hairline and your hair will grow back. However, over time irreversible damage can be done if the hair starts to grow back and is pulled out again and again. This happens because the constant pulling of the hair eventually distorts and atrophies the follicle. This eventually weakens the growth of the hair, and cause your hair to grow back finer and shorter. In severe instances, the follicle can become permanently scarred so that hair is not able to grow at all.

How can this be treated;

The Swedish Aromatherapy Treatment – This is a treatment used to invigorate your scalp, it opens up the pulse and stimulates the blood flow on your scalp, and it also helps to enhance hair growth. For Severe cases Ginger Anti- hair loss treatment is advised.

It was an exciting time for ‘Naturalistas’ in Lagos on Sunday the 4th of June 2017 at the Natural Hair workshop hosted by the Natures Gentle Touch Hair Institute.

Nigeria’s first and largest hair Institute, Natures Gentle Touch Hair Institute hosted another edition of its Natural Hair workshop with ‘Naturalistas’ in attendance. This event featured a general discuss on Natural hair trends, how to care for it, maintenance and the politics of wearing natural hair in the workplace. In addition to this was a Q & A session where guests had the opportunity to ask the Institute’s lead Trichologist questions that border around how to take care of their natural hair. This session was a major eye-opener for guests present on appropriate Natural Hair care regime.

The workshop was created by the Institute to further live up to its vision of empowering individuals through education and knowledge sharing. It is a platform designed to support Nigerian women who choose to wear their natural hair, to meet other fellow ‘Naturalistas’, to commune and support one another on this journey of natural hair.

“The Nigerian Kinky natural hair is beautiful when it is well taken care of. On the flip side, it can be difficult to manage when you do not know what to do. Creating a platform for women to share their natural hair stories as well as gain knowledge from hair experts can make a huge difference in ensuring that this natural hair journey is smooth and enjoyable” said Anita Anosike, Brand Manager of Natures Gentle Touch

There will be an upcoming edition in the nearest future which will be open to more Nigerian women outside Lagos who are natural, transitioning to natural, and those with chemically-treated hair that are considering a journey into natural tresses.

The event ended with ended with a networking session.

Does bad hair mean bad health? Is your hair trying to tell you something about your health? Maybe. Some conditions and medications affect your body as well as your hair. In other cases, you may just need to take better care of your hair or scalp.

Dandruff isn’t contagious. So how do you get it? this may be due to an overgrowth of a fungus. Other possible risk factors include oily skin, stress, obesity, cold, dry weather, and having eczema or psoriasis. Although it’s embarrassing — and the itching can be bothersome — dandruff isn’t harmful.

Hair loss otherwise known as alopecia areata may mean that your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, causing hair to fall out , often suddenly. Most people will have one or two bald patches, which can be treated easily with injections but in some cases all body hair falls out. Alopecia areata isn’t harmful or contagious, but it can be tough psychologically. Hair may grow back on its own, and treatment may help it grow back more quickly. Unfortunately, some people may experience alopecia areata repeatedly.

Baldness is also another hair state. Though hereditary, the trait may be more influenced by your mother’s family than your fathers’ according to research. Male pattern baldness often starts with receding hair at the temples, then on the crown, leaving a horseshoe-shaped ring of hair around the sides of the head. There are available treatments for baldness.

Lastly, help keep hair shiny by eating salmon and walnuts for omega-3 fatty acids; spinach and carrots for vitamin A; nuts for selenium; and oysters and cashews for zinc. All help maintain scalp and hair health, as do low-fat dairy, whole grains, and vegetables. Double the results: Foods good for your hair are also good for your heart.

Every woman loves her hair and wants her hair to be beautiful at all times. There are several factors that can cause your hair to be dry. Dry hair is not a hair type—it’s a condition that can be treated.

Understanding the root cause of dry hair and taking action may be all you need to get the locks you long for.

Common Causes

Your hair can get dry because your scalp doesn’t make enough oil to moisturize your hair, or your hair lets moisture escape.

Your scalp isn’t making enough moisture. Hair has no natural lubrication. It relies on oils made in the hair root to keep your hair moisturized and looking lustrous.

Sometimes, hair doesn’t make enough oil, which leads to very dry hair. As you age, your hair naturally makes less oil. Since the roots are under your skin dry scalp goes along with dry hair. Dry scalp peels and sheds, leading to dandruff flakes on your shoulders.

The moisture you have is escaping. Each strand of healthy hair has a protective layer called the cuticle. Just as your roof shields your home from rain, the cuticle shields your hair from heat. In a healthy cuticle, the layers lie tightly together and keep moisture in. When a cuticle’s layers separate and peel away from hair, its ability to hold moisture is compromised – some oil escapes.

Products with certain chemicals. Certain shampoos can leave your hair dry and some other hair care products.

Other factors that can leave your hair dry is pollution, use of thermal heat styling tools among others.
